Abstract
|
|
|
A case of Hurthle cell adenoma of the thyroid in a 54 year old Korean female is reported in view of the rareness of its kind of tumor and interesting aspects of the histogenesis.
Clinical complaints of the patient include egg-sized slow growing tumor mainly over the right lobe of the thyroid gland, exophthalmos, pitting edema on both extremities for about 20 years, associated with anorexia arid evidence of hyperthyroidism. Under the diagnosis of toxic nodular goiter of the thyroid, right total and left partial thyroidectomy was performed. Resected tumor. mass showed a large oval shaped, well encapsulated, partly cystic lesion measuring 3.0 X2.0 cm., with dark brownish and vascular appeareace. Histologically, the tumor is composed predominantly or almost entirely of large acidophilic glandular epithelial cells, described by Hurthle. There were areas of those cells in the capsule and a few areas of atypical cells, but the tumor appeared to be begin.
